April 2020
Over the last few years, my mentor, Matt Jarvis, taught me about personal biorhythms and I learned that every quarter I need at least a few days off to recharge, focus on self care, and digitally detox.
Now that we're in quarantine, how many of us have just skipped the days off and rolled right into working 7 days a week? It's hard to turn off when your office and living space have become one.
Don't forget that we still need downtime and what this looks like for you might be different than what it looks like for your colleagues (and that's ok). Be the kind of boss who brings this up today and supports some time off for your team - in whatever form that looks like. They will return to work more recharged, focused, and creative.
And remember, right now most people feel the need to proactively get permission to take time off and aren't in a place where they feel comfortable asking for it. Be the boss who recommends it. Your team will appreciate it more than you think.

Over the past few months there have been good days, bad days, rough days, and optimistic days. Days that feel like weeks and days that feel like an hour. Today is a hard day in the marketing world, so today I'm going to let myself be sad. But, tomorrow I'm going to go back to optimism, and the hope and belief that at the end of all of this we will be better, stronger, more thoughtful, innovative, creative and shine brighter than we ever have before.

As a PR professional for 20+ years, this pandemic feels like the crisis messaging of 9/11, the financial rock bottom of 2008/2009, and the uncertainty of our future in 2016.
It's a tough time as we all look inward at ourselves and our purpose, but are also responsible for guiding strategic positioning for some of the most influential brands in the world. Don't forget, we are human. We are going to make mistakes, but we're doing the best we can and we're all in this together.
Here to chat, offer any help I can, and be a resource if you need me.

To everyone leaving your industry because you've learned over the last few months that it no longer brings you joy...
I say, GOOD FOR YOU. Follow that passion, find what brings you joy and don't apologize for it. YOU DO YOU. Greatness will come in whatever form that looks like for you. I'm inspired by you and right there alongside you.

While I get my consultancy up and running, I’ve spent the last 3 weeks reconnecting with people in my network. People I’ve worked with in the past, people I’ve met along the way, people who have been connected to me by other people and everyone in between. My key takeaway from all of this for me is that I’m seeing an unprecedented amount of collaboration and support of competitive companies vs competition. And that’s making me think… what will a world look like if we all work together vs against each other?

"Essentialism in activism is key to impact."
I said this to someone the other day and can't stop thinking about it and my role as an activist over the last few years. To me, essentialism is about doing 1-2 things with all my heart, passion, and power vs doing 20 things just meh. This rings true for me professionally, but I realized it's important as an activist as well. There are so many things we need to be fighting for... #blacklivesmatter, #equity, #climatechange, #LBGTQIA, #prisonreform, #metoo (and many, many more).
Fight for where you can make the most impact and don't ever stop fighting. There's so much progress to be made.

The power of partnership.
Now is the time when we need to collaborate and partner with voices and areas of expertise different from our own. There is no one-size-fits-all answer to solve the problems of today. But, hopefully, together we can get there faster.
Thank you to all of those who have connected with me in the last few weeks to work together. There's enough work for us all and together I know we're going to do great things.
Reach out and connect with a new partner today. You won't be disappointed.

If you are interviewing right now and part of the interview process is to "come up with a strategic plan, creative concept, sample content, etc." YOU ARE DOING WORK FOR FREE and being taken advantage of.
I know there are millions of people who need work right now, but your ideas, your strategic insight, and your work should always be paid for.

As PR people, our job now is to not only tell stories of the brands and agencies we work for, but to hold them accountable. If you got your company in a story this past month that said they are going to hire more black people and invest in diversity training, don't just place that story, ask leadership monthly, weekly, and daily what the progress is on their promise.
This is how YOU show up in the world, not just the company and clients you work for.

My Monday LinkedIn feed is full of "experts at empathy," "self care is where you should focus," and "are you a compassionate leader?"
I'm so in on all of this, but all of this is also making me go ARGH inside! True empathy, actual self care, and learning to lead with compassion are WORK. Work that needs to be done on your own timeline and for yourself before you can practice with others.
So, on this Monday, in July, in 2020 consider this... if you're surviving you're thriving. Don't compare yourself to everyone else on the internet (which I know is much harder than we think). YOU DO YOU.

Deep thoughts Friday... What's one thing you did before the pandemic (like part of your everyday life), that you won't do after? And what's something new that you're doing now that you'll keep doing?
Something I won't go back to... drying my hair every day. In my mind, straight hair equaled professionalism (bring on the curls!).
Something new that I'm going to keep doing... walking meetings. I'm walking 4-6 miles a day (sometimes on a call, sometimes listening to my favorite playlist), but being outside (mask on!) is good for the mind and body.
